Kokkini Hani is located 14km east of Heraklion. From Heraklion, the old road follows the coast of North Crete, which provides a beautiful view on the sea and the rough shore.
The area of Kokkini Hani became first known when in the early 1900’s some buildings were placed, including a Hani, which is an inn for people and animals. Farmers, on the way to the market of Heraklion with olives, grapes and other products, often stopped here to rest, eat and spend the night. They could leave their horses and donkeys down there to eat and sleep.
It was in the 60’s that the village really grew, electricity and phonelines were connected and several hotels were built for the tourists. Since then the village developed rapidly, because of it’s beautiful beaches, restaurants and tavernas.
